Description: 1700's Germany, Unusual Three Separate Layered Medal, Gilt Silver, Cast And Chased, with a Jewish theme. The names "David and Jonathan" are inscribed on the shields, of the two men pictured on the obverse. David and Jonathan are mentioned in the book of Samuel, in the Bible. Jonathan is cited as the son of King Saul, King Of Israel, and of the tribe of Benjamin, while David was the son of Jesse of Bethlehem, and the tribe of Judah, and Jonathan was seen as his competitor for the crown of the King. This medal is most unusual, it has an obverse with the two men pictured, but the men have been embossed, with the the background removed, and there is the German inscription around flat, set upon a blank silver disc. The reverse is much the same, with a woman standing next to a palm tree, both are also embossed, with the background removed, and the wording in a circle, and set upon the same silver disc as the obverse. All three pieces are held tightly in place with a silver band around the edge. The appearance is three dimensional, with both sides lifted up slightly, not adhered to the silver disc. The workmanship is superb. There may be other medals in this series of Biblical themes, but this is the only one that I have seen. The medal is Silver with the remains of a light golden wash, 43 mm in diameter, the edge is 4 mm wide, and the condition is Excellent.
