Vol I – [iv], 188pp Biography of William Shakspere, 810pp, with 28 engravings including the frontispiece and title vignette; Vol II – [ii], 778pp with 18 engravings including the frontispiece and title vignette. Title vignette and 44 illustrations on steel, printed in double columns. Illustrations from pictures by C. W. Cope, W. P. Frith, C. R. Leslie, D. Maclise, E. M. Ward, C. Clint, H. S. Marks, W. Q. Orchardson and others. Approximately 15 inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine – fair to good condition – gilt titles, five raised gilt bands, lavish gilt decoration to the compartments, worn top and tail with some loss to the colour.Joints – fair condition – rubbed and worn, cracked to the base of the front joint of Vol I.Corners – fair to good condition – bumped and worn through to the boards.Boards – fair to good condition – worn and rubbed leather with gilt and blind decoration to the boards, the front boards have a centre gilt panel, edges of the boards are bevelled and worn.Page edges – good condition – all gilt.See above and photos. Internally Hinges – good condition – the front hinge of Vol. I is cracked through to the leather at the base, paper cracked to the remaining hinges but leather intact, all holding well.Paste downs – good condition – plain yellow with decorative gilt dentelles, some foxing and marks.End papers – good condition – plain yellow, some foxing and marks, front end paper to Vol I nearly detached.Title – good condition – vignette to both illustrated and engraved title pages, additional letterpress titles, tanned and foxed in both volumes.Pages – good condition – both volumes have a frontispiece, Vol. I portrait of Shakspere and Vol II.
