Description: WANT IT NOW? WHY WAIT?? BUY IT NOW!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN MY AUCTION THIS AUCTION IS FOR LARKIN SOAP CO. 50TH ANNIVERSARY 1875 - 1925 1 1/2" COMMEMORATIVE BRONZE COIN DESIGNED BY JULIO KILENYI PRODUCED BY WHITEHEAD & HOAG The Larkin Company was founded in 1875 to produce Sweet Home Soap. He was so successful at selling door to door ("soap slinging" or "factory to family"), that his line of soaps expanded and ultimately grew into a variety of household products marketed through more traditional channels, chain stores, and mail order. By joining a Larkin Club, you could buy virtually everything you needed from one source. Larkin's innovations extended to his treatment of his employees. The list of amenities included daily exercise, savings accounts, educational services, men's and women's clubs -- even free coffee. A dental clinic, doctor's office and public library branch were all on-site. An early air conditioning system provided fresh air. His biography, "John D. Larkin: A Business Pioneer" by Daniel I. Larkin was published by Western New York Wares in 1998. Larkin's product mix after 1900 included over 600 products and 1,700 premiums offered in its catalog. Besides, its mainstay soap products, Larkin produced perfumes, pharmaceuticals, foods, paints, varnishes, and radios. It created and purchased subsidiaries to manufacture its premiums that included pottery, glass, furniture, textiles, and shoes. In 1902, to reach growing urban markets, it opened branch showrooms and offices in and near major urban centers on the East Coast and in the Midwest. The company was sold in 1941 and the new owners continued a mail order business until 1962. Darwin Martin started as a book keeper and eventually became corporate secretary. Most notably, he commissioned his friend, Frank Lloyd Wright, to design the Larkin Administration Building and his house in Buffalo and a summer home called Graycliff. Elbert Hubbard, the brother-in-law of John D. Larkin, was Larkin's first salesman and a one-third partner in the company. He worked in the upper echelons of the company until his retirement in 1893. He eventually founded the Roycrofters in East Aurora, NY. This auction is for a vintage 86 year old '1875-1925'-'FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY'-'John Larkin Co.' Medal. Obverse is bust of businessman/pioneer John Larkin, with his signature. The reverse shows the Larkin factory in Buffalo, NY. The coin is 1 1/2" dia. & weighs 26.0 g.
