Description: 1934 news poster: an unusual wedding This is a rare Illustrated Current News poster, dated July 2, 1934. It measures 12.5 x 19 inches in size. Printed on glossy paper, it is in attractive, very good condition, with four thumbtack perforations in its blank left margin and two short edge tears (not affecting the image at all), plus two old fold lines, as originally issued. (These Illustrated Current News posters were published 3 times a week. They were folded into quarters when they were mailed to subscribers, which were typically stores or newsstands which displayed them for viewing by their customers.) The poster presents a wedding performed as a publicity stunt for Atlantic City, during the depths of the Great Depression, when a lighthearted human interest story could be used to provide a distraction to readers financial worries. It shows a minister standing on the rear of a boat mark Steel Pier, administering marriage vows to a young couple treading water in the ocean waters off Atlantic City. The posters title and caption explains: A WEDDING IN THE DEEP This unique wedding took place off the end of the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, N. J. a half mile from shore. Struggling against high waves, Charles L. Pearson, Jr. slipped a ring on the wet finger of Miss Ida Swinamer, who unfortunately was not able to swim and said I do amid gurgling and strenuous efforts to keep afloat. Photo shows the minister balancing on the edge of a boat. Insert the happy couple. The poster has the National Recovery Administration eagle symbol in its bottom left corner, with the slogan, NRA Member - U.S. - We Do Our Part. The N.R.A. was a cornerstone of FDRs New Deal policies which helped America recover from the Great Depression. [gsp12307b] _gsrx_vers_1680 (GS 9.8.3 (1680))
