Description: 1934 news poster: Austrian Chancellor assassinated! This is a rare Illustrated Current News poster, dated July 30, 1934. It measures 12.5 x 19 inches in size. Printed on glossy paper, it is in attractive, very fine condition, with four small thumbtack perforations in its blank left margin, plus two old fold lines, as originally issued. (These Illustrated Current News posters were published 3 times a week. They were folded into quarters when they were mailed to subscribers, which were typically stores or newsstands which displayed them for viewing by their customers.) The poster presents a four photos related to the assassination of Austrias leader on July 25, 1934, in an attempted coup which became known as The July Putsch, in which a group of over 150 Austrian Nazi SS men invaded the chancellory and killed Dollfuss. While forces supporting the Nazi cause staged an uprising which lasted several days, government forces regained the chancellory building within a day. The abortive coup led to over 200 deaths overall on both sides, with 13 rebels later being executed. It was one dramatic chapter in Europes march toward World War II during the 1930s. The posters title and caption explains: CHANCELLOR DOLLFUSS OF AUSTRIA ASSASSINATED 1. Chancellor Englebert Dollfuss of Austria who was assassinated by Austrian Nazis. The death of the little Chancellor, who was only four feet, eleven inches in height, has cast war clouds over all of Europe. 2. Premier Mussolini of Italy and Chancellor Dollfuss at the time of their meeting last year. 3. Dollfuss reviewing a group of his followers. 4. The wife and family of the Chancellor. The poster has the National Recovery Administration eagle symbol in its bottom left corner, with the slogan, NRA Member - U.S. - We Do Our Part.
