About the Book ~ The book is written in a Negro dialect. "Some years after the Civil War, Susan Merrick, later Mrs. George Heywood, came from her New England home to Aiken, South Carolina. There she found not only a kindly and beneficial climate, but real friends, and gracious, genuine hospitality. She formed close ties of affection with those of her own and the older generation. At "Redcliffe," the ancestral home of Major Harry Hammond, she became a frequent visitor. The traditions of the family, their personalities, their history, the love and loyalty of their devoted Negro servants (formerly slaves) made upon her impressionable mind indelible pictures of Southern plantation life at its finest. It is natural, then, that the [true] story of "Maum Nancy" should express in high lights and shadows this life that is fast being lost in the mists of passing time." ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ This rare, signed Book would be nice for any Historian, Collector, or for anyone interested in Limited Edition Books, History, or Southern Plantation Life after the Civil War!
