Crowe - Vintage Book 1. Does God Care?Parable of the lost sheepWhat man of you, having an hundred sheep,if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninetyand nine in the wilderness, and go after thatwhich is lost, until he find it?—Luke 15:4JL HE FIRST MESSAGE SENT BY SAMUELMorse, on May 24, 1844, over his new telegraph line fromWashington to Baltimore contained these familiar words:“What hath God wrought!” In November, 1951, these exactwords were repeated as the first message on a new form ofcommunication. The message was sent from Cedar Rapids,Iowa, to Sterling, Virginia, by way of the moon. It markedthe first successful experiment with sending of ultra highfrequency waves over long distance. These waves do notnormally travel beyond the horizon when sent the usual way.In order to travel beyond the horizon they had to be reflectedfrom some object high in die air. Therefore, the sending sta-tion at Cedar Rapids aimed its transmitter at the moon. Thereceiving set at Sterling was also pointed to die moon. Themessage went up to the moon and back, a distance of 450,000miles, in 2’/2 seconds.“What hath God wrought!” Indeed! The almost unspeak-7able grandeur of the universe expands our idea of thegreatness of God. The creative powers of men to explore itsmysteries bring us a new sense of wonder at the creativepower of God. But by the same token we are increasinglyled to question the concern of God for men. We are so smallin such a large universe. Is the God of the ultra high fre-quency wave interested in me? That is the question we tiny, finite beings hurl up toward the skies. Is the answer only theecho of our own voice reflected from the moon ?Jesus did not think so. He came to show men that God is aGod of love—tender, warm, personal. What is God like? What does God think of us ? To these ancient questionsJesus makes a simple, disarming reply in the parable of thelost sheep. God is like a shepherd. The shepherd was animportant person in those days. He loved all his sheep, everyone. When one strayed away, the shepherd left the rest oftire flock safely grazing and went and sought it out. He keptlooking until he found it. Then he gathered it up in hisarms and carried it back with great rejoicing. This was anew and startling idea of God. It brought light and hope todiscouraged men. It has rich meaning for us today.IGod is interested in human beings. The plain point of theparable is the love of God for die individual. The shepherdknows his sheep one by one. He knows their individual traits. They all belong to him. Each one is as important as theothers. When one of them wanders away from the grouphe goes out after it. He still has ninety-nine. But it is the lost... e34
