Description: "Woman Reading in a Garden, 1898" Source: Vuillard, published in 1968 Description Title: "The companion panel to that of Misia relaxing under the trees (previous page) presents another view of the Natanson garden, showing a corner of the unpretentious house whose windows are shuttered tight against the midday glare. Some people wander idly in the middle distance while, prominent in the foreground, seated on a bench, are Pierre Bonnard and Marthe, his companion since the early 1890s and his future wife. The scene is ordinary-even banal-with no overt emotional appeal, merely depicting a young woman reading a magazine while her bearded companion leans over to play with a kitten. Yet in their casual disregard of one another, and in their relaxed proximity, we can sense the existence of a close, strong relationship between them. This pastoral symphony illustrates very well Vuillard's method of painting wall decorations. Despite the diminishing scale of the background figures the overriding impression is one of flatness. Rich color luxuriates-greens, ochers, reds, pinks, lilacs, among which the sharp blacks and whites ring out dominantly. "All sorts of contradictions," writes Claude Roger-Marx, "are skillfully upheld . the people appear to be composed of the same substance as the landscape; the path is the same color as the flesh; a cloud is puffed out like a dress; a fabric looks like a field; what seems to be a butterfly is a passer-by.' In these pictorial hymns to nature and to love, Vuillard transports us into a realm of pure poetry whose elements, although rooted in reality, are intensified, spiritualized, almost transfigured. The dreamlike character of the Anet panels, more suggested than stated, is profoundly Symbolic. We have portrayed here, as has been finely said, not so much the happiness of living in a beautiful garden as the happiness of thinking about a beautiful garden where one might live. It is the memory of a vision, not the vision itself. Its charm enthralls us as the reflection or echo of an exquisite moment." Unique and distinctive.
