After a while,the urge became too great to resist,so Dean decided to plunge into aproject of his own and join the troops.Since he is a machinist and welderby profession, a good portion of thework involved was no great problem.Starting with a 1949 fifty dollar Har-ley 3-wheeler, Dean invested a totalof $4,500 in the one and a half yearsspent building his creation.Since the bike was destined tospend its life as a show machine, theengine was left primarily in stockcondition. The major modificationsmade were installing WR camshaftsto replace the standard items, andboring the cylinders 0.015 just toclean them up. Also, the combustionchambers and the cylinder headswere polished to a lustrous finish.The standard header system carriesthe gas out of the cylinders back intoa new chrome muffler. Just at therear of the engine is the standard3-forward speed transmission withthe reverse gear left intact. Dean didall of the transmission and enginework himself, except for polishing theheads — that was done by the HoakBrothers.With the engine and transmissionwork out of the way. Dean next turnedhis attention to the frame modifica-tions. Standard forks were extendedslightly, and special rear axles werefabricated. The frame was moldedand filled, and this work took manyhours to accomplish.The entire body, which is designedto look like a Model T, is constructedfrom wood and Fiberglas by theowner.
