Description: S.E. Shires CLWSE Trumpet in silver with upgraded Shires W05 leadpipe, annealed bell, steel bead in bell rim, rare 2009 vintage and even rarer CLWSE model, excellent condition. This horn was made when Steve Shires was building the handmade instruments that earned him his stellar reputation for quality and sound. It was built in December 2009 and returned to Shires in 2012 for installation of a W05 leadpipe. I purchased it in 2014 from Trent Austin at Austin Custom Brass. Trent described it as one of, if not the most efficient horns he had in stock. It is an incredible instrument, free blowing yet crisp, very efficient and nimble with an amazing range of tonal color. It is flexible when needed, yet slots very easily for legit playing. It is truly an all-around great horn for any application. Model breakdown: C means a “C” bell, Shires’ broadest taper. LW indicates lightweight construction. S indicates a steel bead that adds crispness and presence. E indicates a special annealing treatment to the bell. I have watched Shires trumpets on eBay and Reverb since I bought this one in 2014. I have never seen another CLWSE, or for that matter, any horn with either the S (steel bead) or E (special annealing treatment for the bell). This horn really sings! The W05 leadpipe has a .345 venturi, is described by Shires as “incrementally more efficient than the original WH leadpipe but just as open and flexible”. Trent Austin describes it as “an amazingly efficient leadpipe with tons of color options”. This horn has the X tuning slide. Bore is .459. I have used this horn for section and lead play in Big Band and Concert Band since 2014. It is an amazing instrument that far surpasses my needs and ability. I am retired now, and I am enjoying my older classic horns in a community concert band. Though I will miss it dearly, I have decided to let it go so its amazing potential may be realized by the next owner. Condition is excellent, there is one small scratch through the plating on the 3rd valve slide receiver, otherwise plating is intact. There are normal use small scratches. There are signs of small dent repair on the bell stem and crook that were on the horn when I bought it. The valves are fabulous, all slides and water keys are perfect. The horn was ultrasonic cleaned and had a precise port alignment within the past few months. I recently purchased a new W05 leadpipe and second valve slide from Shires to replace slightly damaged items. The leadpipe was installed by Mike Nye of Nye Instrument Repair in Tempe AZ. Total costs for those items and installation were ~$600. This incredible instrument is absolutely gig ready in every sense. Photos tell the story. This sale is for the horn only, no case or mouthpiece. I will pack it carefully and very securely using Trent Austin’s “trumpet burrito” method, which is how I received it from him.
