The lock does not close completely without force - which I did not use because I did not want to take a chance on breaking the latch. This piece could, more than likely, be cleaned up to look in much better shape than it currently looks, but I did want to interfere with the integrity of the piece, so I'll leave that to you to attempt if you'd like.
