The species is native to most of the United States and Canada (light and dark green areas on the map), and if you are planting milkweed for Monarch butterflies it is very important to use a species that is native to your area. Milkweed seeds need a period of cold to break dormancy, so they must either be planted in the fall or kept for at least 30 days at a cold temperature. These were gathered on my land last fall, removed from the pods and silk, and cold-stratified for five months at North Dakota winter temperatures, so they should germinate very well for you in the spring. They were gathered last fall from plants that host many Monarch butterflies every summer. When I drive past them in season I always see butterflies, and can smell their lovely fragrance through the open window. Theee plants are tried and true! You will receive at least 50 large, plump, dark brown seeds by First Class mail. Please plant them 1/4" to 1/2" deep when danger of frost is past in your area so the young seedlings won't freeze, and water enough during the first year so the soil doesn't get too dry. Milkweed will grow well in full sun, but butterflies prefer plants growing in light shade. Milkweed is a hardy perennial; it will bloom for many years but not necessarily the first year, and seeds will continue to germinate the second and third years after planting. Monarch butterflies can feed on it before it is old enough to bloom.
