Description: Offered is this set of six antique volumes of the works of Tobias Smollett, published in Philadelphia by John D. Morris and Co. This "Glastonbury Edition De Luxe" of works of the 18th century Scottish novelist has a 1902 copyright date and is one set of a limited illustrated edition of 1,000, of which these are #511. There is a black and white frontispiece illustration in each volume. This is a rare find; at the time of original listing I could not find any other full six-volume sets of this edition for sale on eBay. The six volumes are: 1) "Roderick Random, Parts I & II" 2) "Roderick Random Part III" and "Sir Launcelot Greaves" 3) "Peregrine Pickle, Parts I & II" 4) "Peregrine Pickle, Parts III & IV" 5) "Count Fathom" 6) "Humphrey Clinker" Each book is approx. 8 3/8" x 6". All are in good condition overall. The green hard cloth covers all have some small areas of surface wear and there are a few areas of light wrinkling, but most of the cover surfaces are intact. Most also have some degree of pale white spotting. The paper labels are still well-attached. There is no cracking inside either the front or back covers of any volume. The white endpapers have all browned to some extent, mostly opposite the personal bookplate of a previous owner which is inside the front cover, although a couple of volumes have more extensive browning. A few also have some light pencil-written notes, which could probably be easily erased if desired. Although I haven't checked every single one of the more than 1,000 pages, in several quick look-throughs I see no missing or torn pages and all of the pages are well-attached to the binding. There are a few pages with "dog-ears". They are rough-cut and there is some wear to the page edges, and a few pages are uncut. The gold on the top edges of all the volumes is still mostly intact and shiny. The pages have yellowed but most are generally clean and clear, with only occasional light foxing. I see no writing in the bodies of the books. The tissue papers accompanying each frontispiece illustration are all present. I have a lot of experience with vintage and antique books but am not an expert so please let me know if my description is missing information and you have additional questions. I will do my best to answer them! Please take a moment to look at some of the other items in my eBay store!
