Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE These cuttings will be available for shipment late March 2024. I am a backyard gardener who is just trying to find good hands for my plants due to a very limited space I have. I do not use chemical herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers. I planted red currant 15 years ago because the translucent red berries are packed with vitamin C - 100 g of berries contain 50% of the daily value. But I had been missing hugely a black currant. I have purchased it as soon as it became available here, in my city in Michigan, 7 years ago. And it has been going strong since: during first weeks of July, I have been having nice harvest(3.5-4 lb) of very distinctively flavored black currants-very happy! Currant bushes can grow up to 3-6 feet wide and tall, and can range from red, white, or pink, to black. Also leaves can be dried and used to brew tea or added to make a marinade. As to the Berries-we eat them fresh, make jam, jelly.Next year (and I am hoping for bigger harvest), we might try making juice or attempt a black currant wine! Currant berries freeze very well!Freeze them to use in drinks later, use fresh or frozen in baking, pudding, add while roasting poultry or meat. Dry black currants for a healthy quick snack, use dried black currants for baking. To enjoy eating them fresh, I wait till they are completely ripe, then they are at their sweetest. Happy to share with you fresh black currant cuttings that are 7-11" long (pictures #2, #4 and #7 show Spring 2022 version of longer cuttings). The Fall version of cuttings may have some leaves (not just buds). They are shorter then the Spring 2022 pictures show. You will receive a pack of 7 cuttings which are 7"-11" long. Should develop good roots and establish well in your garden or a pot by the next season. At the arrival of the package allow the cuttings to absorb some water, choose one of the methods for rooting. It is desirable that you have some rooting experience, although, I have done rooting cuttings both in the ground and in the pot successfully without previous experience. Please, trying to root in the pot or ground, get yourself familiar with the method(s) of rooting and choose a shade to keep your pot in and water timely not waiting for the soil to get dry. Try not to overwater. Do not use fertilizer in your soil for initial rooting. The position in the garden Black currant grow best in locations that receive morning sun and afternoon shade, or dappled shade part of the day. The best planting soil-rich soil with the compost dug in, the soil can contain some clay with sand and peat or other organic matter breaking the clay, should be rather loose soil, providing good drainage, some clay would help retaining moisture and cooler temperature for the roots. Black currant is very successful grown in raised beds. Black currant plant is happily self-pollinating, although having several plants will significantly increase berry yield.Spacing is about 5', they eventually grow into 5' wide 5-6' high bushes. Fertilization One of the good options is an addition of compost in the fall (September would be perfect). Fertilize in the fall by spreading 1" layer of composted manure over the root zones of the plant.Another option - use granular fertilizers according to the label, providing all vital elements and micro-elements, with emphasis on some elements during intense growing season, and other elements after the fruiting is over and plant preparing for cold and a new season. Make sure while applying the fertilizer that you do not damage the root system that is close to the surface. Also, use mulch to keep the soil moist and cool during the hot days of summer.Pruning/editing the black currant shrubIt is desirable to remove certain branches. 1) If you noticed damaged branch-simply broken branch, or damaged by a decease, insect/pest or winter freeze(not really) or damage for any other reason-remove the whole branch or an affected part. 2) Branches need to be removed once they achieve certain age and reduce the productivity, this stimulates the growth of new branches, prolongs productive life of a black currant plant overall.3) Open the center of the bush to the sunlight and for better air circulation-keep the optimal amount of the branches. Currant is a thornless understory shrub that grows in hardiness zones 3-8. It is very cold hardy. I have pink phlox as companions to black currant bush, which grows nearby a pine tree, they all seem to co-exist very well. I will use expedited shipping to ship the plant immediately after ordering: the cost is $7.99 For multiple orders there is a combined shipment available.Happy Gardening and thank you for visiting this listing.I have got several questions from you on the variety/type of black currant I have.
