Magnificent 'settler' type football player, from the Baoulé ethnic group, located in the center of Ivory Coast.Quite large piece, published in a book by Alain Larem - see the last photos.Football started to be very popular in Ivory Coast in the 1970s, with two local teams: "Africa" and "Asec Mimosa", attracting most of the fans. The fact that this one is not wearing the clothing of one of these teams could indicate that the sculpture is older, 1960s.Museum quality statue. For collectors. Painted statuettes cover a wide variety of areas in Africa. Generally dedicated to the cult of ancestors, spirits of fertility or divination, they are found on altars, canoes, in houses or carried on one's body, among peoples as different as the Yoruba, the Fanti, the Akan, the Ewe etc. They appeared with colonization, hence their name.
