Description: Original American Modernist hand carved wood sculpture from the first half of the 20th century. I bought this stylized portrait of a girl in a New York City estate sale in the late 1970s or early 1980s. According to the family's lore, it had been purchased by their father from the sculptor Jose de Creeft just prior to WWII. Unfortunately, it is not signed and they did not have any supporting documentation so I can only attribute it to De Creeft. The sculpture is hand carved from a hardwood log, probably red oak, possibly chestnut. It stands approx. 14 1/2 inches in height x 9 inches across and has a now stable vertical shrinkage crack on the left side. The underside shows traces of glue and felt padding, otherwise it is in excellent condition with a lovely old patina. Jose de Creeft (1884–1982) was an important Spanish born American Modernist sculptor. His most beloved sculpture, is the 1959 bronze statue, Alice in Wonderland, which serves as the centerpiece of a fountain in New York’s Central Park. Work by de Creeft has been featured in thirty-seven one-man exhibitions, including a major retrospective at the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona in 1980, which circulated throughout seven different cities in Spain, a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1960 that traveled to thirteen additional venues, and major exhibition at the National Museum of Art, Washington D.C. in 1983. In addition, de Creeft has a long group exhibition history at landmark institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, The Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.
