Description: Vilhelm Nikolaus August Hagborg (26 May 1852, Gothenburg - 30 April 1921, Paris) was a Swedish painter who spent most of his life in France. His father was an Associate Professor. Against the wishes of his parents, he decided on a career in art and, from 1872-1874, he studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm with Vicente Palmaroli. In 1875, he went to Paris to complete his training, but ended by spending most of his life there. Initially, he focused on genre scenes and imagined historical scenes from 18th century France. Some of them were sent home and one was purchased by King Oscar II. August Hagborg (1852 - 1921) is an important artist from the naturalistic (realism) movement in Europe during the turn of the 20th century. Realism is the attempt by artists to represent subject matter truthfully rather than incorporating exaggerated, implausible, exotic elements. Hagborg’s works are included in the collections of The Nation Museum of Sweden, Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, and The Gothenburg Museum of Art in Sweden. Hagborg began his studies at the Academy of Fine Art in Stockholm then moved to Paris after to complete his studies. Hagborg had a studio in Paris, which is where most of his works that came to the United States were originally purchased. His most popular and desirable works depict scenes, similar to the one listed here, were inspired by coastal Normandy and include everyday figures such as clam diggers and fishermen.
