Bernstein and Woodward - All the President's Men, jacketed first edition, signed

Description: All the President's Men, signed by the authors Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward New York: Simon and Schuster, 1974 First edition, first printing Condition: Near FineJacket Condition: Near Fine This first edition, first printing, chronicling the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism that helped precipitate the first and only resignation of an American president, is signed by both authors. Carl Bernstein signed at the center of the title page, partially over the publisher’s printed name, and Bob Woodward signed below, on the blank lower half of the title page. A hand-written note, laid in, supplies provenance: “Woodward | signed at | National Book Festival | Washt. DC | Sept. 30, 2006 | Bernstein | signed at | [indecipherable] Books | Washt. DC Sept 20, 2007”. The only previous ownership mark is the name “ILENE GILBERT” ink-stamped on the upper right first free endpaper recto. Condition of this double-signed copy is near fine in a near fine dust jacket. The navy cloth binding is square, clean, tight, and unfaded with bright silver spine lettering. We note only a tiny bruise to the upper rear corner and a trivial few blemishes to the coarse cloth. The contents are exceptional – beautifully bright and clean. Even the page edges remain strikingly bright. We find no spotting and no discernible age-toning. The dust jacket is entirely complete, with no loss and retaining the original “$8.95” lower front flap price. We note mild toning to some of the pale blue background, negligible hints of shelf wear to the spine ends, a tiny spot of soiling to the upper rear hinge, and a little creasing to the edge of the front flap. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover. All the President’s Men is the story of how the arrest of five burglars at Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate office-apartment-hotel complex in Washington, D.C., on June 17, 1972 led to the August 9, 1974 resignation of President Richard Nixon as he was facing likely impeachment for his role in covering up the scandal. The book was published in 1974 just months before Nixon’s resignation. Woodward’s and Bernstein’s journalism won their newspaper, The Washington Post, a Pulitzer Prize in 1973 and in 1976 their book was made into a film starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman. The enormous influence of this book and the dogged journalism it chronicles render it difficult to hyperbolize. Woodward and Bernstein’s work on the Watergate scandal has been called “maybe the single greatest reporting effort of all time.” (Gene Roberts, The New York Times) It has been called “The most devastating political detective story of the century.” TIME’s Alex Altman described its impact thus: “It’s the work that brought down a presidency and launched a thousand reporting careers… and is perhaps the most influential piece of journalism in history.” Ron Elving of NPR has said "There have been scores of memoirs and analyses written about the events we call 'Watergate,' but none captures the early days of that era-defining White House scandal quite like All the President's Men." In 2022, the publisher of this first edition, Simon and Schuster, issued a commemorative edition timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the burglary. It also coincided with the televised hearings of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol. All the President’s Men may yet come to be regarded as a sweet, innocuous tale from an age of innocence. An age when journalists were intrepid and respected for dogged pursuit of objective truth that pillared the integrity of the republic. An age when the worst a President might do was seek to illegally influence an election – rather than belligerently deny the results of one, incite and praise violent insurrection, and promise that if he’s returned to office “In four years, you don’t have to vote again. We’ll have it fixed so good you’re not going to have to vote.” But that is history as-yet unwritten.
