British War Medal Wrong Regiment Name Liverpool King’s Royal Rifle Corps Wounded

Description: An original British War Medal awarded to 48119 Pte G Williams of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps. George is listed as having served with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on his medal, but it would appear this was a clerical mistake, and he actually served with the King’s Liverpool Regiment. George Williams was born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. At the time of his marriage in 1905, he was working as a pattern maker. George served on the Western Front as follow. He served with the 13th Battalion from 18th November 1916 to 30th November 1916, when he transferred to the 1st Battalion. He remained with the 1st until 7th March 1917. From 20th June 1917 he served with the 11th Battalion until transferring to the 4th Battalion on 8th July 1917. He remained with the 4th until 30th August 1917. He appears on the War Office casualty list on 29th September 1917 as wounded. It is therefore most likely that he was actually wounded on 30th August. The war office casualty list and pension records all indicate that he actually served with the King’s Liverpool Regiment and not the King’s Royal Rifle Corps as stated on his medal! I have been unable to find a medal index card, but he does appear on the medal roll. This would also make sense for the battalion’s listed above to be those of the Liverpool Regiment, not KRRC. The 4th KRRC were in Salonika when George supposedly served and was wounded with them on the western front. However, all the Liverpool Regiment battalions were on the western front. George later transferred to the Royal Defence Corps with the number 75174. He was discharged from the army in March 1919 and returned to his home in Noel Street, Lodge Lane, Liverpool. In 1921 he was working as a waiter at the Exchange Station Hotel. He died in 1926. Please see photos for condition.
