Signed by Charlie Finley for the Kansas City A's, Hunter eventually led Oakland to consecutive World Series Championships in 1972, 1973 and 1974. He had become the youngest player to win 200 games by age 31 since 1915.After 1974, Finley made a mistake, missing an annuity payment and Hunter's agent jumped at the chance to get him away from Oakland and into a bidding war. Every team except the Giants attempted to sign Hunter. Many teams offered packages nobody had thought possible, but eventually the New York Yankees gave him the deal he wanted, making him baseball's first player with a contract in the Millions (5 years, 3.35 million, much of it to be paid out later). He would in 1975 have maybe his finest season with 23 Wins and 30 Complete Games, the last pitcher to do so. Also with 20 Wins, he became the fourth and last pitcher to do this in 5 consecutive seasons (1971-75). As a hitter, Hunter was pretty decent, hitting .350 in 1971 with 36 Hits in 38 Games. An early season foot injury in 1977 was the start of an injury plagued finish to his career. He was diagnosed with diabetes, and later arm injuries. He would play out his Yankees contract and retire after 1979. Hunter was an 8-time All-Star, 5-time World Series Champion (1972, 1973, 1974, 1977, 1978), led the league in wins in 74 and 75, led in ERA in 74. He threw a Perfect Game for the A's on May 8, 1968. His final numbers were 224-166, 3.26 ERA and 2,012 Strikeouts. His Number 27 is retired by the A's and he is in their Hall of Fame. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987.
