Description: When Sherman's Army marched through South Carolina and reached Cheraw March,1865 they destroyed Confederate ammunition dumps and a railroad shipment of ordnance, including French 69 caliber minie ammunition brought in to Charleston by Blockade Runners and meant for the Carolina campaigns. Samuel HM Byers, a noted 5th Iowa officer was at Cheraw the day of the explosion and describes it in his memoIr of service in the Carolinas, "With Fire and Sword". An original group of 3 unfired French minie bullets from the Cheraw explosion. I got these from a digger 30 years ago and they have been in my collection since.
