Darklands is a wargame set in a fantasy world not too different from our own. Beginning in the year AD 650, Darklands will combine various fantastical and historical elements found in northwest Europe in the so-called 'Dark Ages' in a wargame that will be intuitive, fresh and interesting. Much of its setting will be known to fantasy wargamers everywhere, and thus be very easily accessible. It also has the biggest gribblies you'll see in any 30mm wargame! Amongst those invited to defend Britannia in ages past by the Romanii were the Jutes, at first glance little different from the Anglecynn or Seaxans or Friesians that joined them in the time of Henghest and Horsa. Now, in this age of darkness, the corruption of the Jutes is of black renown, for their barrows unleash the dead that knew battle long ago and their hosts embrace shape-shifters of altogether different form, forms of the mounds and the tumuli, forms of the disturbed earth and the cracked rocks. Now, the Jutes have power, power to destroy and to conquer all those who abhor their black land, for even in death do they become stronger. The Jutes have lost more territory than they care to admit, thanks to the Seaxna and the Brythoniaid and the Ysians. The southern coast of Bryten from Cant to Kernow was once theirs, but now their western borders now end at the Isle of Wight - the realm of Wiht in Darklands, and where Arwald rules for his King. A small island off the coast of southern England, Wiht is where the Jutes built the huge barrows and tombs that hold their legions of undead, using natural rock formations and caverns that held their own dangers - not least the incredibly powerful barrow spiders and manasceancan, the many-legged monsters of earth and soil. The ancient barrows and combes of Ytene, thought destroyed and plundered long ago, brought forth the respite of the Jutes: for it was from the remains of the great ones lost far below that the Ettenwihtas rose, timeworn maybe but still strong and dutiful. At first resistant to the fabrications of the corpse-wakers, the souls of Bānbreca and other giant creatures of cracked bone soon understood their purpose and their future: free to walk upon the earth again, yet bound to the lives of those who, in their desperation, had seemingly worked the impossible. The Ettenwihtas may remember little of a life where they breathed air and drank water, but what they can remember serves the Jutes well, for the breadth of their axes and the might behind them cleaves both the convictions and the souls from their enemies.
