Description: Offered for sale is a beautiful and quite scarce antique COVERED COMPOTE. It was made by Riverside Glass Works of Wellsburg, WV. This is Riverside's #327 pattern, AKA Marsh Fern. The pattern has a simple art deco look, with images of blades of grass or leaf clusters that repeat eight times around the edge of the bowl. A smaller version of the same design appears on the foot of the compote (picture 5) and on the finial (picture 6). The base was made in two pieces, and the bowl was attached to the stem with a molten-glass wafer. An ornate fern-leaf design is cut into the sides of the bowl and lid, in addition to the simpler pressed pattern (pictures 4 and 7). The Marsh Fern pattern was introduced in 1889. The compote measures 8 1/4 inches (21.0cm) in diameter at the rim, and stands 11 1/2 inches (29.2cm) to the top of the finial. The base alone stands 7 1/2 inches (19.1cm) tall to the rim, and the foot is 4 3/4 inches (12.1cm) in diameter. A U.S. quarter is shown in the first three pictures, to give an accurate impression of the size at a glance. The base is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, scratches or repairs. The lid has damage. There is a whitish flaw in the glass on the top of the lid (picture 8) and some edge chips and one small crack (picture 9). All my items are from a SMOKE FREE home.
