EARLY VICTORIAN COUNTRY WALNUT SECRETARY

Description: Here's an early Victorian country walnut 2 piece secretary with a bookcase top dating from 1860-1870. This is a Lancaster county Pennsylvania cabinetmaker-made piece. The case and drawers are hand dovetailed with chamfered drawer bottoms. I call pieces like this "country Victorian" because they were produced in the same workshops that made typical country furniture like corner cupboards, jelly cupboards, Dutch cupboards, milk cupboards and the like. These pieces show certain victorian era influences in styling and features and the earlier ones, like this secretary, are all hand made by a cabinetmaker in a workshop. This desk has a fold-over writing surface which measures 25 inches X 21 inches when folded open. There are 2 paneled doors in the base as well as 3 drawers. The center drawer when pulled out acts as a support for the fold over writing surface. Please note, as pictured, that 2 pieces of the ripple molding on the left and right sides of the center drawer are missing. The top has 2 glass doors, each with 2 panes of beautiful wavy original glass, and 2 small drawers left and right. There are 3 adjustable shelves in the bookcase top. The top also has chamfered corners and a bold molded cornice. The finish is original and in excellent condition. The white porcelain knobs are actually original but could be replaced with wooden or brass knobs if the porcelain ones do not appeal to you. The dimensions are 7 foot 4 inches tall X 46.5 inches wide X 24 inches deep at the base and 12 inches deep at the top. Overall, this 2 piece desk and bookcase in walnut is an incredible value and could be the focal point of decoration in a room as well as serving a practical and useful purpose.
