Description: This is an unusual set of illustrations that are possibly by Ethel Larcombe. It was a home made book about girl's names, consisting of a hardboard front and back cover with pages that were originally held together with string and then with sellotape. On the inside front is a dedication that reads: 'Nora Evelyn Bennett, September 27th 1905, 3rd anni, From her Godmother Helene (?) Gamble'. Annie's father was Alexander Lowe, an accountant in Cheshire. When he died in 1905, his estate went to Edward Owen Griffiths, a sculptor. The font is in the style of Charlie Rennie Mackintosh Renaissance. The high cross of the A in ALPHABET and the E and H look like this, as does the high loop on the P and the B. There is also the same Old English diamond top to the commas, the diamond full stop and semi-colon dot. The side stroke for the i too is the same. Ethel Larcombe won a competition to design for The Studio, which helped introduce CRM. She was an illustrator of children's books and a typographer, who went to work for Blackie the Glaswegian publisher. She also worked for Deans illustrating rag books and there are a couple of poses of the girls that echo these images. All letters of the alphabet are represented here. Most of the pages are good apart from the tape marks and occasional paint, and sometimes a tear - see photos. A very rare set of images that give the girls interesting things to do.
