Description: Rare Antique Cast (Pig) Iron Canvas Back Sink Box Decoy signed A. D. Late in the 19th century Sink Boxes were special boats that floated nearly level with the surface of the water. The hunter would lie down inside the boat with decoys all around him in the water and wait until he could lure ducks within shooting range. Heavy cast (pig) iron decoy-shaped weights, placed on the flat outside outsize edges of the boat that would help hold the boat at water level and also lure the waterfowl within shooting range. This cast iron weight was used at the Gooseville Gun Club in Rodanthe, North Carolina late in the 19th century. It weighs over 17 pounds just shy of 14" long and 5" wide by 5.5" high. The hole in the tail was used to attach the decoy by rope or twine to the boat so the decoy would not be lost if it slid of the boat. There is a crack in the bill, but not all the way through.
