Description: I'm pleased to offer this very aesthetic Calcite with Limonite specimen from Steeden, Hesse, Germany. The specimen measures 1.98 x 1.90 x 1.92 inches or 5.02 x 4.82 x 4.87cm and is in excellent condition. This is from the Roland Schmidt (1941-) collection of Littleton, Colorado and is accompanied by his signature shallow specimen tray with label. Mr. Schmidt worked as Director of Mineralogical Laboratories for Hazen Research of Golden, Colorado. This piece shows a very fine twinned calcite crystal that measures about 2 x 2cm projecting off a limonite-infused calcite matrix. The white band is an earlier generation of prismatic calcite--I originally thought this was "needle quartz" but it effervesces vigorously upon dropping a bead of muriatic acid upon the seam. The contrast is striking! About 75% of the calcite is clear with the backside showing pronounced zoning from included iron oxides. I had never seen any specimen quite like this and was totally unfamiliar with the Steeden locality. Various limestone quarries are worked in the area (some active to this day) and the Schmidt label only gives Steeden as the locality so I cannot pinpoint this to any particular quarry. This is really a choice specimen in excellent condition with fantastic aesthetics! Please check my feedback and my other eBay items.
