Description: This looks to be an original pencil sketched lithograph by artist Frank Serratoni. It is of San Francisco’s China Town. Most of Serratoni’s lithographs were painted in with watercolors, this is one of the rare few that are uncolored. Frank Serratoni (1908-1970) was born March 1, 1908 in Detroit, Michigan and was the fifth child of nine. At an early age he showed promising art talent. He studied commercial art and ended as a watercolorist well known for his ahis San Francisco scenes. At age 19 he won a contest on a “ Greater Detroit” theme his subject being a river front Civic Center. This story of his winning artwork Carried on front pages of all Detroit and Windsor papers. He attended the Detroit society of arts and crafts on a scholarship. It was “THE” school in Southeast Michigan and is now called the Center for creative studies. Frank went to work in Chicago and attended select classes at the Chicago Art Institute. In the late 1940s he moved to San Francisco where he started a silkscreen process with his San Francisco Prints. This process to color the areas was not successful. He then created his small San Francisco prints in the 1940’s. They were a lithograph on a watercolor tolerant paper. The areas were painted in with watercolors and the finish looked almost like an original. His watercolors hang in the Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco, CA and the exclusive Olympic Club. The frame measures approximately 14 inches by 11 inches. The sketch itself approximately 13 by 10 inches. It is signed by the artist but I do not see a date. Judging by the sketch it looks to be from about the 1940’s -50’s. The frame is brand new, however there are some smudges on the artwork as photographed above. This is a vintage item and I am not an expert on art but by the looks of the sketch it appears to be original. So keep that in mind when making your purchase.
