June 1887 in Moritzberg near Hildesheim; † 12 February 1972 in Düsseldorf) was a German landscape and marine painter.Fritz Köhler, whose baptismal name was Friedrich Köhler, was born in 1887 in Moritzberg near Hildesheim. In 1892 his family moved to Hamburg, where the cholera epidemic had just broken out. The Köhler family was spared the epidemic. At the age of five, Köhler attended elementary school. In his youth, Fritz Köhler traveled the seven seas on merchant ships.From 1905 to 1907 Fritz Köhler attended the Hamburg and Altona School of Applied Arts. The then director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Alfred Lichtwark, recognized Köhler's talent and advised him to attend the university in Weimar. From 1909 to 1912 he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Weimar, until 1910 with Max Thedy (antiquity drawing and nude studies) and then as a master student with the landscape painter Theodor Hagen.After his studies in Weimar, Köhler set up a studio in Hamburg for a short time. From 1913 Fritz Köhler worked in Düsseldorf. During World War II his apartment and studio in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel were destroyed[1] and he evacuated to Berchtesgaden. In 1945 he returned to Düsseldorf.
