This Porcelain Hardneck Garlic has a pungent flavor when raw, rich and sweet when baked, It is cold hardy and preforms well in cold climates, It is a robust and healthy grower, subject to few pests. It is a good producer that is popular with home gardeners and growers, alike. Given proper growing conditions, Music garlic produces large sized bulbs with easy to peal cloves. It stores up to 10 months at cool room temperatures. This variety produces a "scape" shortly before harvest time. Scapes are long, leafless flower stocks that grow directly from the root. Many gardeners remove these curling stocks so that more energy is directed to the growth of the bulb. Scapes, with their milder flavor, are considered a garlic delicacy. Sauté them in butter or use them in pesto. They are a bonus crop of hardneck garlic varieties. We like to dehydrate scapes and grind them into powder to add to a multitude of dishes. They also freeze well. A photo of scapes has been added to this listing for customer reference. A Sad Story Our smaller sized garlic bulbs have a very sad story to tell. Last October, their cloves were planted in rich, fertile soil with loving care by the Garlic Fairy. They were covered with a deep layer of straw mulch and they eagerly began to grow roots until the cold weather gently put them to sleep. The cold and the snow didn't bother them as they snuggled, secure in their bed. All was right with their world. A burst of spring greeted these garlic cloves and they eagerly stretched to break through the straw mulch to greet the sun. The cold returned with a vengeance and although this was not a huge problem, the young garlics grew sleepy and stopped growing until the warmth returned. April showers bring May flowers and with those showers, the little garlics grew. The Garlic Fairy and her faithful pig, "Petunia"visited them often. They plucked the stray weeds from their beds and nourished them with fish emulsion and all the good, natural things that little garlics love. All was right with their world. May came. Each morning, the garlics awoke to "Another Gray Day in Pennsylvania..." Valiantly, the growing garlics streched toward the sun. Late in the month, their scapes appeared. They twisted excitedly into curls before stretching upwards. Their bulbs grew too and they began to swell with pride as their cloves developed. July came, it was going to be an early harvest. Most of the grown garlic were ready and eager to leave their beds behind but there were those smaller plants who had become confused by strange weather and a sudden hot spell. They wanted to remain behind and continue to grow larger. A forecast of rain, made that impossible. The healthy, but smaller sized garlic bulbs had to be harvested along with their much bigger siblings. The Garlic Fairy was sure she could hear them crying, in protest. It's a sad story, to be sure, because the handsome, larger bulbs are always the first ones to find new homes. The little, garlics wait, hoping against hope, that they will find a home before they are dried and turned into tasty garlic powder, which is a noble, but much less rewarding fate. The Garlic Fairy and Petunia want to find good, loving homes for their small, friends who only needed a little more time to reach their full potential. These bulbs are eager be planted or eaten. They will be wonderful for culinary use. If they are destined as starter seed stock and given TLC, they will do their best to increase in size next year. These garlics are a good investment because, due to their smaller size, you get more bulbs and cloves per lb. at a price lower than the larger sized garlics. Size, always isn't everything. Perhaps our sad story of little garlics will have a happy ending, after all! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fall planting is recommended for most gardeners and cloves can be planted anytime between September and November. Planting at this time generally produces the large bulbs that can be harvested the following summer. We plant in mid October and Harvest in July. Some home gardeners plant in the early spring. Planting at this time generally produces a smaller yield. This is a natural product, grown by "The Garlic Fairy", without chemicals or pesticides. The outer bulb wrappers may show slight staining. This does not affect the quality of the cloves in any way. It is an indication that the bulbs have been cured naturally and cleaned by hand. The number of cloves per bulb may vary.
