Description: Thank you for visiting my listing! Please check out my other listings for more rare and unusual seeds! Gevuina avellanaChilean Hazelnut Hardiness: USDA zone 8 (10F)Source: Rarepalmseeds.comReceived: 7/27/21 Gevuina avellana is a rarely available member of the Proteaceae family, a group of plants native to the southern hemisphere that evolved at a time when Phosphorous was scarce in soil - and will not take kindly to being given fertilizer containing phosphorous. This species is a nut bearing evergreen shrub Native to Chile that is rare in the nursery trade, and quickly sells out. The nuts are often described as similar in taste to a hazelnut, though some describe it as similar to Macadamia, another member of the Proteaceae. Quick tip - don't leave the greenhouse door open if you have squirrels nearby. Doh! I have previously tried to grow this species myself, but have yet to nail down what it likes - my previous efforts have only germinated after I had given up on them. One nursery that recently sold small seedlings suggested that they dislike pot culture when small and that they should be planted immediately upon receipt, which may be the secret I am missing in keeping them alive. This time I ordered a large quantity and I hope to unlock the secrets to growing this species, while also making it available to other adventurous gardeners willing to attempt cultivating this species.
