IN AN earlier volume, Illustrations in Roll and Codex, Dr. Weitzmann dealt with the reconstruction of classical book illumination in general and with the principles on which it rests. In this, the fourth in the series of Studies in Manuscript Illumination, he studies the survival of the classical pictorial tradition in Byzantine art. Attention is focused on the mythological scenes represented on miniatures and ivories of the tenth and eleventh centuries in an effort to explain the appearance of classical themes in the art of that period and to determine the sources from which they were derived. The illustrations of the commentaries to some of the homilies of Gregory of Nazianzus by Pseudo-Nonnus, the mythological miniatures in the Venetian manuscript of the Cyne-getica of Pseudo-Oppian, and a considerable number of ivory plaques of the so-called rosette caskets, constitute the main material of the present study. For the Pseudo-Nonnus commentaries the author suggests a mythological handbook of classical antiquity, probably the Bibliotheke of Apollodorus, as source, while the mythological -scenes in the Venetian manuscript of the Cynegetica point to not only a mythological handbook as source but also to several other illustrated ancient texts like Homer's Iliad, the tragedies of Euripides, Dionysian and bucolic poetry, and the Alexander Romance of Pseudo-Callisthenes. Finally, the author demonstrates how the same classical sources served the tenth century ivory carvers of rosette caskets. Dr. Weitzmann then relates these artistic currents to the revival of classical literature during the so-called Macedonian renaissance and so illuminates the whole humanistic movement around the imperial court of Constantinople.
