ARTIST INFO:HARVEY DANGER BIO/INFO- It was formed in 1992 in Seattle , Washington, by Aaron Huffman and Jeff J. Lin, who were both journalism students at the University of Washington. Drummer Evan Sult and singer Sean Nelson were brought into the band in 1993, solidifying the band's lineup for the remainder of their initial existence. ONLINE ARTICLE Last week, Seattle rock band Harvey Danger quite literally gave the performance of its career. Unfortunately, most of those who do remember Harvey Danger will recall the band as a one-hit wonder for its song "Flagpole Sitta" in 1998 and nothing more. Harvey Danger found itself among the myriad rock bands in the '90s to be chewed up and spit out by the studios after milking the band's one single. As a result, the band quietly disbanded in 2001 after the label dropped them for not replicating "Flagpole Sitta" and instead crafting one of the most creative and enjoyable rock albums of the decade in "King James Version." After a few years handling their respective projects, the band members gravitated toward one another once more to re-form, but this time as an independent venture, developing a devoted cult following of fans in the process, the writer of this column included. Over the course of two nights, Harvey Danger played through its three-album discography in the members' hometown of Seattle to celebrate the release of their first album 10 years ago, adding a healthy course of unreleased songs, B-sides and covers to treat the die-hard fans. The performance seemed cathartic, allowing the band to let go of previous grievances associated with certain songs. No matter any one member's personal opinion toward the material, the band performed as vibrantly as it did 10 years ago. Afterward, the members came down from the stage like perfect gentlemen to humbly chat with fans. Musically, the band always stood out from its peers. Noticeably louder and more in the vein of older rock than their friends in Death Cab for Cutie and Nada Surf yet not at all in the "grunge" style popularized by Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Harvey Danger never seemed to snugly fit in the boundaries of Seattle's booming music scene. Frontman Sean Nelson's voice suits the pop-rock sound the band's single is noted for, but was never content to confine himself to one sound. The band's showcase of styles feels at times like a crash course in rock history. At the drop of a hat, the band will explode into a Chuck Berry-influenced rock number with "Woos!" that would impress Little Richard, then fold into a piano ballad just as quickly. The band has no gimmicks, no bells or whistles. Quite simply, Harvey Danger is an excellent rock band with highly intelligent, clever lyrics that playfully use history, politics and literature to challenge, but never intimidate, the listener. If it weren't for the impressive display of musical diversity, Nelson's creative lyrics would certainly be the band's highlight. Last week's performance seemed to revitalize the band's drive to perform, and the band noted its members were going to work on writing the followup to 2005's "Little By Little" after their 10th anniversary spectacle was completed. While it will likely be a few months before any news of a new album is reported, do yourself a favor and get to know the band's catalog.
