Description: Evansville is a city in and the county seat of Vanderburgh County, Indiana with a population of 118,414 in 2020. Situated on an oxbow in the Ohio River, the city is often referred to as the “Crescent Valley” or “River City”. Early French explorers named it “La Belle Rivier”. It was founded in 1812, incorporated in 1817 and became a thriving commercial town with a river trade. The era of Evansville’s greatest growth occurred after the Civil War. The city was a major stop for steamboats along the Ohio River and was the home port for a number of companies engaged in trade via the river. Coal mining, manufacturing, and hardwood lumber was a major source of economic activity. The Willard Library is a private donation library incorporated in 1881 to serve the city of Evansville. Willard Carpenter, Evansville’s “pioneer of public charity”, established a trust fund in 1876 and built and endowed the library. The library building was started in 1876 at First Avenue and Pennsylvania Streets. A depressed economy halted construction in 1877 and the buildings foundation lay for five years, unfinished. The building was resumed in 1882 and Carpenter devoted the rest of his life to supervision of the building. It was built in the "Gothic Revival" style, designed by James W. Reid (of Reid & Reid). The formal opening was held in 1885 and it was listed on the "National Register of Historic Places” in 1972. It is also on this uncredited card, which is a UDB, postmarked 1904 in Evansville and received at "Station D" in Chicago. The card is in good condition with minor wear on the corners and a clean, clear image of Willard Library. The reverse is also clean. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
