Description: This lot consists of the 1683-1700 First and only Printings in Three (3) Volumes, Rarely found as such, of A COMPLETE HISTORY OF ENGLAND, FROM THE FIRST ENTRANCE OF THE ROMANS UNDER THE CONDUCT OF JULIUS CAESAR..., By Robert Brady (1627?-1700) as follows:VOLUME I - AN INTRODUCTION OF OLD ENGLISH HISTORY. COMPREHENED IN THREE SEVERAL TRACTS...TOGETHER WITH AN APPENDIX CONTAINING SEVERAL RECORDS, AND A SERIES OF GREAT COUNCILS AND PARLIAMENTS BEFORE AND AFTER THE CONQUEST, UNTO THE END OF THE REIGN OF HENRY THE THIRD. AND A GLOSSARY..., By Robert Brady, Doctor of Physic, and Printed in London by Tho. Newcomb for Samuel Lowndes in 1684 and bound in a folio containing [xii] (incl. title-page, 6-page Epistle to the Reader and a secondary title page printed by T.N. for Samuel Lowndes dated 1683), 326, [337]-412, 60 (Appendix + Great Councils & Parliaments), 68 (glossary), [16] (Index, ending with Errata), with one blank leaf each at front and rear. Errors in pagination include pp. 45-64 being omitted, and pp. 233-240 and 411-412 being repeated. All 3 tracts within have separate title pages but continuous pagination, the first title being dated 1683. The volume is embellished with decorative woodcut head and tailpieces and decorative initial letters. The full leather binding has blind-paneled boards and page edges appear to have some red stain and are sprinkled.VOLUME II - A COMPLETE HISTORY OF ENGLAND, FROM THE FIRST ENTRANCE OF THE ROMANS UNDER THE CONDUCT OF JULIUS CAESAR UNTO THE END OF THE REIGN OF KING HENRY III...WHEREIN IS SHEWED THE ORIGINAL OF OUR ENGLISH LAWS, THE DIFFERENCES AND DISAGREEMENTS BETWEEN THE SECULAR AND ECCLESIASTIC POWERS, Etc., and Printed In the SAVOY by Tho. Newcomb for Samuel Lowndes in 1685 and bound in a folio containing [xiv], lxviii (w/Errata), [viii] (8-page list of author's whose writings were consulted), 675, 254, [67] (Index). The first 675 pages contain a history starting with Julius Caesar and finishing with Henry III, followed by a 254-page "Appendix de Sententiis Judicum" (Judgements of the Judges), much of which is in Latin. A blank leaf at the front is followed by a printer's leaf which in turn is followed by a portrait frontispiece of Jacobus II after R. White facing a title page printed in red and black and is further illustrated with woodcut head and tailpieces and decorative initial letters. There is one blank leaf at the rear. NOTE: 1/2 of a duplicate of leaf 441-2 bound in between pp. 442 & 443 has been torn out vertically. The book is bound in full blind-panelled and decorated calf leather with all edges stained red.VOLUME III - A CONTINUATION OF THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF ENGLAND: CONTAINING THE LIVES AND REIGNS OF EDWARD I. II. & III. AND RICHARD THE SECOND and Printed In the SAVOY by Edward Jones for Samuel Lowndes in 1700 and bound in a folio containing [iv], 467, [2], 139 (Appendix) + Judgements of Judges mostly in Latin but also French and English, [24] (Index). Actual pagination of this volume is as follows; Pp. 1-278, 281-442, 451-452, 445-448, 457-467, [2], 139, [24]. The title page is printed in red & black, and the facing illustrated title page depicting the 4 British Kings found within was Printed for S. Lowdnes, and A. & J. Churchill. It is further illustrated with woodcut head and tailpieces and decorative initial letters and is bound in a "Cambridge" style blind-panelled and decorated mottled and polished calf binding having 2 blank leaves at the front and 3 at the rear.This is a Complete Set of the First and Only Printings of All 3 volumes that comprise Brady's HISTORY, being an extremely important compilation of legal and historical writings relating to English legal and political history from Anglo-Saxon times to the Civil War. They measure 8.25" x 13" and are bound in period leather, the boards of all 3 volumes have gilt-rolled edges with matching spines having heavy gilt decoration and raised bands and red morocco leather spine labels. Printed mainly in Roman types, but with many words and phrases printed in black letter (Gothic) types. The Appendix to Volume I is taken entirely from the DOOMSDAY BOOK, and is therefore in Latin. The extensive Glossary represents an important advance in English legal lexicography.
