Description: Lovecraft, Howard Philips. Holograph (original, handwritten) letter to Clark Ashton Smith. September, 1932. Smith was one of the few professional authors whom Lovecraft exchanged letters. Fine. The envelope is signed "HP Lovecraft". The letter is signed "E'ch-Pi-El". Allusions to Lovecraft's mythic creations in the form of salutations, chants and incantations are present. He also describes a trip to Montreal and a solar eclipse. A list of books for sale by Frank Belknap Long is included and is signed by Long. Lovecraft mentions that Long is in “hardup" - but - "By the way - Belknap has just received $200.00 for his story in Strange Tales, thus setting some of his apprehensions at rest." The letter also has some interesting criticism. Of A Merritt Lovecraft writes - "I read Merrit's "Face in the Abyss" + "Snake Mother" + thought them far from the worst weird tales I’ve seen. He has a certain distinctive power, even if he does merely play on a formula.”
