Description: Measures 4-7/32" X 6-7/8", 251+ pp, original title THE LAST PORTAGE, written by Walter O'Meara, published by Grosset & Dunlap / Charter Communications Inc. (NY), Charter paperback #37103-5. This is a novelization of a true incident, which occurred to JOHN TANNER, which Tanner eventually related in his 1830 memoirs. At the age of nine years in 1789, John Tanner was kidnapped from his Kentucky cabin by a band of Shawnee Native Americans, who eventually traded the boy to the Ojibway Native Americans in the Northwest Territory. Tanner was adopted into the Ojibway, and was raised in their customs and culture. Finally, nearly 30 years later, Tanner left his Native American surroundings, and returned to "civilization" in Michigan Territory. But John Tanner was ostracized now by his new "white" neighbors, and he was no longer accepted amongst the Ojibway, either. Finally, in 1846, John Tanner murdered JAMES SCHOOLCRAFT, son of the very influential HENRY SCHOOLCRAFT; and, although several search parties attempted to track Tanner down, he was never seen again.
