The inspiration for Tarkay’s works clearly lies with French Impressionism & the “Ecole de Paris”. Itzchak Tarkay is considered to be a key figure in the modern figurative movement. Artworks by the Israeli artist are instantly recognizable—perceptive studies on people and places in a timeless world, captured in image by female socialites, parlors, terraces, and quiet cafés. His art has been featured in more than 50 exhibitions around the world. Tarkay passed away in 2012, leaving behind a legacy that not only represents a great artist, but a great man. A man of great imagination and expressive gifts, with a special sensitivity and understanding of this life, Tarkay comprehended the duality inherent in man as one who should not only admire the beauty, but try to understand the sacred depths of this woman as well, thereby, perhaps, coming to terms with his own spiritTarkay was born in 1935 in Subotica on the Yugoslav-Hungarian border. In 1944, Tarkay and his family were sent to the Mauthausen Concentration Camp, until Allied liberation freed them a year later. In 1949 his family emigrated to Israel, living in a kibbutz for several years. Tarkay attended the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design from 1951, and graduated from the Avni Institute of Art and Design in 1956.His art is influenced by French Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism, particularly Matisse and Toulouse-Lautrec. His work was exhibited at the International Art Expo in New York in 1986 and 1987.
