Description: This is a very rare FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING hardcover, with dust jacket, of James Baldwin’s acclaimed first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain. The book is in very good condition but for a prior owner’s handwritten name and date on the front free endpaper (June, 1953, the month after the book was first published in May), roughly a dozen formerly dogeared pages, small spotting toward the top edge of pages 68-69 (with some bleed-through spotting to prior pages 63-67 and later pages 70-74), some ink underlining to page 269 and occasional faint indentations from what appear to be erased pencil marks, toning from a small slip of paper laid in between pages 90-91 (with a little toning carryover to prior pages 88-89 and later pages 92-93), a small tear/hole on page 282, toning to the endpapers, some gentle creasing to the last three endpapers, a paper clip mark to the top edge of the rear endpapers, two old book reviews scotch-taped to the rear endpapers below the ink notation “Time—Review” written on the rear pastedown, and light bumping and fading to the spine ends. Please see photographs as to condition. The book is tightly and squarely bound and the gilt on the cover and spine remains bright. The dust jacket—which is NOT price clipped—is in very good- condition but for various chips, scuffs, worn areas, creases, splits, and tears. Please see photographs as to condition. The jacket spine also is sun-faded and has old tape repairs, several pieces of scotch tape placed horizontally and extending slightly to the front and rear covers of the jacket. See photos. The color on the jacket cover remains vibrant. The scarce dust jacket is now protected in a removable archival mylar jacket protector. This highly collectible and rare first edition will be shipped bubble wrapped in a box, with signature required upon receipt.
