Illuminated in dramatic chiaroscuro, a young witch pours powder into her cauldron, summoning forth a gaggle of monstrous demons that engage in lewd self-gratification. A skull, resting upon the hedge behind the witch, serves as a reminder of death and the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures. The Latin commentary reads: “What evils Desire commands, in the small secluded place; who, by sweet incantation, overcomes the minds of the purest mortals, induces frenzy in everyone! But how quickly it slips by; Death overtakes brief life, brief delights. Laughing for a moment, in eternity suffering regret.” The RISD Museum points out that, while his contemporaries may have used chemical techniques to darken portions of the composition, “van de Velde used engraving alone. His effects are achieved by approaching the plate systematically, using few dots, and densely layering fine and exceptionally long lines in parallel and crossed courses.
