Description: Length: 53.75” Width: 3.125” The story of James P. Carey (1869-1942) is an interesting one and one that attests to the perennial allure of Manhattan as a base for building empires. Carey moved to Manhattan from Middletown, CT as a young man, where through ambition, vision, and shrewd business tactics he built a chain of 25 barbershops and a range of businesses centered around Grand Central Terminal, including the largest barbershop in the world, manicure parlor and hairdresser, laundry, luggage check, car service, and relevant to us, a gentleman’s haberdashery. Today the transportation component of his empires still survives as Carey International. To think that it all started from a barbershop! The tie here bearing Carey’s name, c.1950s, features simple neats of black, gray, and cream on a red ground. 100% silk, sold through J.P. Carey of Grand Central Terminal, New York. Excellent vintage condition, barely visible stain to the front of the tie.
