It features symphonic works (symphonies, suites, symphonic poems, ballet) from several composers, displaying a vast array of countries, music periods and schools of composition. Ancerl's interpretation of Mahler's "Kindertotenlieder" is accompanied by Věra Soukupová, a prolific Czech mezzo-soprano who remained throghout all her career in Prague, her home. Regarding Karel Ancerl, he was a Czechoslovak conductor and composer, renowned especially for his performances of contemporary music and for his interpretations of music by Czech composers. From 1950 onward, he became artistic director of the Czech Philharmonic, a post he held successfully for eighteen years. Following the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia, Ančerl emigrated to Toronto, Canada, where he worked as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra until his death in 1973. As a conductor, Ančerl fostered and helped forge a distinctly Czech orchestral sound, both within the Czech Philharmonic and elsewhere. A contemporary of Vaclac Talich, Vaclav Neumann, Rafael Kubelik and Libor Pesek. In addition to performances of Czech composers, including Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Leoš Janáček, Bohuslav Martinů and Miloslav Kabeláč, Ančerl is also admired for his interpretations of 20th-century composers such as Gustav Mahler, Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók, Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich. - - - - Contents: Brahms: Symphony N°1, Op. 68Dvorak: Symphony N°9 "From the New World", Op. 95Dvorak: Symphonic Variations, Op. 78, B. 70,Janacek: "Taras Bulba"Mahler: "Kindertotenlieder" Martinu: Symphony N°6 ("Fantaisies symphoniques"), H. 343Mozart: Symphony N°38, K. 504Mussorgsky: "Pictures at an Exhibition" (Orchestral)Prokofiev: "Romeo & Juliet" Suite N°1 Op 64Ravel: BoleroSibelius: Symphony N°1, Op 39Sibelius: "Pohjola's Daughter" (Pohjolan tytär), Op. 49Smetana: "Má Vlast"Stravinsky: "The Rite of Spring"Weber: Invitation to the Dance (Aufforderung zum Tanz), Op. 65- - - - Orchestra: Czech Philharmonic OrchestraConductor: Karel ANCERL.Duration: 8 hours, 45 minutes.- - - - Tahra ANC 001 - 1996 - Tahra Label Records- - - - Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost.
