Description: " Founders Award to Marilyn Drewes " Sealed wooden frame/case with glass front. 9 1/4" x 9 1/4" x 3" Nailed brass plate. With vintage, cast solid metal, Bull Terrier Dog mounted on cloth. Nailed hanging hardware on the back. The Bull Terrier is solid metal and cast three-dimensionally. It is approximately 3 1/8" wide and 3 3/4" from the top of the ear to the bottom of the neck. The dog is marked : " BCM Kenart , Made In England " The case/frame has a little surface wear, but is otherwise good. Carefully Packed for Shipment to the Buyer ------------- Additional Information This "founders award" was given to Marilyn Drewes ( 1929 - 2017 ), author, dog breeder and educator. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts , she was educated as a child on the island of St. Croix in the Caribbean. She held a B.S. in biology from Radcliffe College ( Harvard ) and an M.Ed. from Tufts University. She was a passionate lifelong learner, an animal rights advocate and an environmentalist. In 1966 Ms. Drewes was given her first English Bull Terrier by a student’s father. She went on to become a well-regarded AKC terrier judge in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and was the original registrar for the Miniature Bull Terrier Breed. A longtime secretary and researcher for the Bull Terrier Club of America , and a staunch supporter of New England Bull Terrier Rescue, Ms. Drewes helped hundreds of families and dogs find each other and worked tirelessly to encourage " solid bone and sweet temperament " in the breeding of her favorite dogs. Her book, " All About the Bull Terrier and Miniature Bull Terrier ," is still in print as a trusted guide for pet owners and fledgling breeders. A kind and generous mentor to many students and Bull Terrier friends, she was beloved for unfailing calm, her work ethic, and her dry but ever-present sense of humor. Her career as a high school science teacher began in Newton , MA, and concluded in Lynnfield, where she served as science department chair in addition to teaching several generations of biology and chemistry students. In the 1960s and 70s she lived in Topsfield, MA and summered on Little Neck in Ipswich, Massachusetts. After retirement she relocated to Ragged Hill Farm in West Brookfield, MA. Thereafter she spent several years in New Hampshire and worked part-time for Bulger Animal Hospital. From 1997 to 2013 she resided in South Chatham, MA on Cape Cod , serving as a tutor for the Harwich Public Schools, boating on Pleasant Bay and Crowe’s Pond, and walking her dogs and digging clams on Morris Island.
