Description: I'm pleased to offer this large and colorful Cinnabar specimen from the Juniper (Nevada Quicksilver) mine, Lovelock, Pershing County, Nevada. The specimen measures an impressive 4.30 x 3.50 x 2.56 inches or 10.92 x 8.90 x 6.50cm. This piece shows cleavages of typical red cinnabar along with massive material on a fracture surface on a somewhat brecciated conglomerate--this is not a classic conglomerate as some of the fragments are angular. This is an attractive and displayable ore specimen from an important mine in one of Nevada's great antimony/gold/mercury districts. The specimen is accompanied by a former label from Jeffrey Mining Co., Inc. I can't seem to find out much about them but I do recall them having a room at Tucson for many years and I want to say that they were out of Arkansas and perhaps derived their name from the famous Jeffrey quarry near Little Rock that became noted for its incredible "solution quartz" specimens. In any case, the label sports an old price of $45. The specimen sits well for display and the cinnabar mineralization is neatly scattered across the surface to provide contrast in color and texture.
