Description: This is a GeorgeBaxter-com listing - this guarantees that this item is genuine and as described. We only list top quality GENUINE prints at the right price. We do not sell poor quality items This is a Le Blond / George Baxter print called " The Fruit Girl of the Alps" and is one of Baxter's four ladies - Day Before Marriage, Lovers Letterbox, The Bridesmaid and this, the rarer of the four due to it only being published only shortly before he retired. Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE Said to be “copied from the work of an eminent foreign painter (Huet)." I have never been able to trace the original painting but presumably, the artist must be Paul Huet? This is a Le Blond Baxter, that is a print by Le Blond & Co printed from George Baxter's original plates and blocks. Baxter originally published this print in 1859 but after he died in 1867, Le Blond purchased a number of Baxter plates including this one. Although the ‘old’ method of determining whether this is a Baxter or Le Blond version is that in the Le Blond version, the ring is coloured when in Baxter it is not but there are easy ways to tell, the most basic is that Le Blond only used one colour red for the flowers on her dress whereas Baxter used two colour blocks. The single colour block on this copy is enough to determine it is a Le Blond printing. Printed circa 1868 Size (cm ht x w): 58 cm x 47 cm (overall approx. frame size) Over mounted in old gold in old gilt frame Condition: Very good colours, minor surface damage to sky left hand side, please see images. If you would like further information or images please feel free to contact me via 'contact seller' Baxter Print: A print produced by George Baxter (1804 - 1867). He would have designed the image, engraved the steel printing plate, prepared up to 20 plus wood or metal blocks to print each individual colour and then printed them, all on hand presses, one colour at time, his print of the Coronation of Queen Victoria took FOUR years to complete. Baxter Process: From 1849 Baxter sold licences to use his process - between 1850 and 1870's the companies of Le Blond & Co, J M Kronheim, Myers & Co, W Dickes, Joseph Mansell and Bradshaw & Blacklock produced work by Baxter's patent process, these printers are known as Baxter Licencees and their work as Baxter Licencee prints. Victorian colour printing of this period, much by the Baxter Process, was far superior to the majority of colour work that came afterwards when art and quality were superseded later in the 19th century by the requirements of quantity at a cheap price. Please see our website for more information on the printers and examples of their work, many items for sale About GeorgeBaxter-com - I have been a collector of Baxter prints for over 35 years.
