In his going one of the old bonds with the Harper past has been severed. For Lee Hartman first stepped into Franklin Square in 1904. Graduated from Wesleyan University in 1901, he had served an apprenticeship in practical journalism on the New York Journal and the Associated Sunday Magazines. His first post with Harper's was not on the Magazine, but in the Book Department. But in 1908 he was offered an assistant editorship under Henry Mills Alden and Thomas B. Wells. In 1917, when Mr. Wells left for Red Gross Service in France, Mr. Hartman became Associate Editor and finally succeeded Mr. Wells as Editor-in-Chief on the latter's retirement in 1931. Thus began and thus has ended an association of thirty-seven years, all but four of which were bound up intimately with Harper's Magazine, its policies and its fortunes, in a period of great change and unsettlement.
