First let me say that this is only a DIY project if you’re an above average DIY’er. There’s a lot to consider before drilling a 3 1/2” hole through your wall. Unless you’re extremely knowledgeable in electricity and how your walls are made you should probably hire someone with those skills to install for you. As for the unit and performance, I couldn’t possibly be more pleased that I chose the 18k MRCOOL for my 400 sf garage wood shop. I’m in Arkansas and Summer months are hot and humid. Until we drilled the hole through the wall I didn’t realize that my exterior garage walls were actually insulated. Had I known this up front I probably would’ve considered the 12k unit, which is why I mentioned knowing how your walls are made in my first paragraph. We’ve had some cold nights (32° last night) and this morning my garage was a very comfortable 70°. So far I’ve just used the “auto” setting which is pretty much “set it and forget it”. I’ve kept mine set on 70° and regardless of how hot or cold it is outside the auto setting will heat or cool (automatically switching between the two) as the outside temp fluctuates. I don’t know why traditional central heat and air units don’t have this feature, but they absolutely should. We keep our home a constant 71° year round but we have to manually switch the thermostat to AC or heat...not so with this little jewel. It does the switching for you. Just tell it your preferred temp and it’ll do the rest. And I’ll add that it does so whisper quietly...both the indoor and outdoor unit are super quiet. This is a 5 star product all the way. I hope this concept of DIY A/C and heat pump install catches on because this was not a complicated install at all. The hardest part for me personally was to run the electrical through a crawl space in my basement. I have some decent residential electrical knowledge so I had no issue other than the difficulties of running romex from opposite ends of my house. Still, you don’t want to mess up these connections, not to mention the need to run a dedicated circuit from your panel, so I’d recommend a professional electrician if you don’t feel comfortable. However once that is done, the actual install of this mini split is very straightforward. If you’re on the fence, just buy it! You won’t be disappointed. I can’t comment on the heat output just yet, but the A/C is second to none. TheItalianEvan
