Description: Naive Watercolor Portrait of a Young Boy Holding a Blue Book, 1830 or Earlier A charming watercolor on paper, full length portrait of a young boy facing forward and holding a blue book. The wide ruffled collar and style of coat and trousers indicate a date no later than the 1830s. Naive portrait miniatures of children such as this have become difficult to find. The unidentified subject is a good-looking child with short blond hair and large brown eyes. The watercolor is English (there is a St. Albans label on the wooden backboard). The watercolor is housed behind new museum quality conservation glass in a fine gold (yes, real gold leaf) gilt frame with finished corners. The frame is ten years old and is appropriate and flattering to the painting. The matting and backing are acid-free. Viewing area: 4 1/2” x 5 3/8”Framed size: 11 1/4” x 12 3/4” This very competently painted, unsigned watercolor of a charming subject is in very good period condition with only minor foxing/staining to the background paper.
