Description: I have for sale a 1905 commemorative medal from the New York City Department of Docks And Ferries. This department was created in 1870 with responsibilities related to various docks and ferries that served the City of New York. I believe this medal commemorates New York City assuming control over the Staten Island ferry in 1905. This medal is bronze, it is two inches in diameter and in circulated condition. It has a loop at the top rim and came with a ribbon when original. One side at the rim reads DEPARTMENT OF DOCKS AND FERRIES - MAURICE FEATHERSON COMMISSIONER. In the center it shows a symbol similar to the New York City coat of arms and under the symbol it reads THE CITY OF NEW YORK. On the other side at the top rim, it reads CELEBRATION OF OPERATION OF MUNICIPAL FERRIES. In the center it shows a ferry and under the ferry it reads GEO. B. McCLELLAN - MAYOR - OCTOBER 25th 1905. Featherson was a politician, a member of the N.Y.S. senate from 1896 to 1900. Mayor George B. McClellan Jr. was the son of American Civil War General George B. McClellan. He was the 93 mayor of NYC from 1904-1909. It is written that McClellan appointed Featherson Commissioner of Docks and Ferries in 1904 but Featherson is not listed as one of their commissioners?
