Description: Of Mice and Menby John Steinbeck Publisher and Year: New York: Covici Friede Publishers, 1937-Edition: First book club edition. The book club edition was released alongside the first trade edition and can be identified by (a) the lack of a printing statement on the copyright page (the second trade printing would say "second printing") and (b) the corrected version of the text ("loosely" on p. 9 and no bullet on p. 88). The first issue of the book would lack a printing statement of the copyright page (as with this copy), but would have the uncorrected text (as opposed to this copy). Bibliographic reference: Goldstone and Payne (1974), Hallordson (2003)-Condition and Description: Publisher's beige cloth, front board and spine decorated with terracotta square titled in blank and ruled in thick black lines, top edge dyed blue, small octavo (~7.5" x 5"), 186 pp. Hinges and binding tight. Top edge of text block faded. Bookplate, stamp, and writing in ink on the front flyleaf; otherwise, the pages are entirely free and clear of writing and underlining. The pages are rather clean, with an occasional very minor imperfection. A touch of age spotting along the interior front and rear gutter. The front board has a hard bump on the bottom right corner. A remarkably sharp and bright copy.-“A guy needs somebody―to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long's he's with you. I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an' he gets sick.” ― John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men-Inventory ID: 511 - 274 - 359
